| Abstract | This thesis proposes a federated computing architecture for e-learning based on cloud com- puting concepts. This architecture is capable of running a nation-wide content-sharing e- learning system with scalability, reliability, and availability. The e-learning system could potentially be a public learning content repository which teachers can publish new learning content and make it available to students of any schools. The architecture also enables remote-hosting of locally accessible e-learning systems for schools running in the cloud environment. This can remove much of the burden of IT infras- tructure management out of the school, thus, improving schools’ capability to exploit and provide access to e-learning systems, especially schools in rural areas. A complete implementation of the federated cloud infrastructure could significantly reduce cost for schools and students. Schools could focus on providing baindwidth, not additional IT infrastructure for running an e-learning application and students would only require de- vice with Internet access, such as PC or tablet devices. Cloud computing can increase re- source sharing, increase access to content, and increase system security. Application could be dynamically scaled based on the number of students enrolled in a particular semester. A prospective data center size estimate made in this study shows that a cluster consists of only 30 physical cloud compute nodes could host a shared e-learning system for the entire school system in Thailand, and a 1,750 compute node data center could enable every schools in Thailand to own at least one e-learning application instance. Implementing this federated computing architecture could help leverage existing educational quality in Thailand to dramatically expand access to high quality educational context. |
