AbstractThe purpose of this study is to iden tify critical financial management factors affecting financial stability of large contractors in Sri Lanka. This study is based on findings from comprehensive literature review , pre - survey, company financial performance comparison based on company financia l reports and semi - structured interviews. Financial performance was analyzed through financial ratio analysis. Case - wise and cross case analysis were carried out to analyze qualitative data. The results showed that in company level company budget should be developed focusing on utilizing company resources to optimum level, clients should be selected after thoroughly evaluating its financial capacity to make sure timely payments from client which reduce the working capital need of the company, using debt fin ancing at minimal level to finance its operations due to high borrowing rates in Sri Lanka. Project level high emphasize should given to accuracy of monthly project budget which is used as the base of cost monitoring and controlling, purchasing and to deve lop company cash - flow. This study can be used for large contractors operating in Sri Lanka to make awareness about how to maintain fin ancial stability of the company. Mostly studies are done to identify financial failure factors of construction industry wh ich studies lacks on how to maintain financial stability .
