AbstractRecently,construction companies of Afghanistan are in a dynamic growth and business environmentis continuouslychanging because of the growth in competition. The unique nature of construction will always inherit the key constraints like time, cost, quality and client satisfaction, which has to be managed and controlled to implement the project successfully. The project management processes should be implemented at its best to secure competitive business environment in Afghanistan. The study objectives are to identify the key functions and find the level of project management maturity of building construction project contractors.Qualitative approach is used in this study for multiple cases (2 foreign, 2 local) to achieve better results. Thestudy was conducted for fourbuilding construction projects,to find the implementation of project management practicesand their level of maturity. The result shows that the average maturity level for all cases is around 1-2 which mean that the management processes are mostly informal (Level 1) for local contractors and repetitive process (Level 2) for foreign contractors.The analysis found that no significant difference between foreign and local contractor management process but in foreign contractor cases some sub components process and practices were more mature as compared to local contractors. The two foreign contractors and two contractors are compared to identify the average project management maturity to identify the common mature functions and finally recommendations for improvement are also suggested for building construction projects in Afghanistan.
