Abstract | Construction industry is the “engine” that drives the national economy of many countries. It is also a giant industry which employs 15 out of every 100 workers apart from being the largest consumer of steel, alumin i um , copper, cement, rubber, lumber, brick and building supplies, fuel, power etc. This clearly shows that the success of the construction industry leads to well - being of many families. Financial and Cost Management and the measurement of financial activity i n the construction industry seems to resemble that of the other industries but it is very unique because the revenues in the construction industry are generated from the total project while in other industries revenue is developed on the basis of individua l units like automobiles, equipment etc. Therefore, construction management requires a sound knowledge of financial and cost management. Time frame in the construction industry is also very large which needs keen financial and cost management for the proje ct to be a success. It is common that the financial management of the normal industries is applied in the construction industry which leads to cost overruns in many cases. The responsibility at the corporate level and the project level should also be clear ly defined in order to avoid any confusions and blaming each other in the due process of projects completion. For project to be successful in today’s cost driven environment only a cost conscious project team can succeed through efficient Financial and Cos t Management skills. Defining the responsibilities at corporate and project level clearly is the best solution for a better financial and cost management. This thesis mainly deals with the responsibilities and works of financial and cost management depart ment at the corporate and project level. This also describes the standard documentation formats that should be followed by a construction company to protect cost overruns. |
