AbstractDrought is natural phenomenon which is caused loss of agriculture yield, decrease the number of livestock rearing and destroying rangeland. It has been affected during 1998 - 2002 and 2011 - 2017. Majority of people their incomes depend on agriculture production and a nimal husbandry in Banyan province of Afghanistan. This study address farmers’ perception of drought risk and adaptation strategies were used by landholders. The study is analyzed based on both primary and secondary data which is primary data were gathered from 120 sampled farmers’ household survey in both sites (60 from rain - fed site and 60 from irrigated site). Also, secondary data is utilized in climate variability analysis which the results revealed to confirm about farmers’ understanding concerning in creasing temperature and decreasing precipitation in the study site. Moreover, it is assessed severity drought the last decade based on weighted average index (WAI). Drought affected the agriculture yield such as wheat and barley in rain - fed area and also potato yield in the irrigated are a. In term animal husbandry, the farmers loss the number of sheep, cow and donkey due to stress of fodder supply and poor growth of rangeland. To abate with drought’s effects that farmers were applied some adaptive strateg ies in their farming system and non - farm. The on - farm system adjustment was agricultural practices such as cultivation of tolerant verities, decrease cultivation of land and early cultivation and water management like decrease watering area, giving water d uring night time and restoration of rangeland in order to absorbing rainfall during rainy season. The off - farm strategies consist handicraft, wage labor, selling animals and borrowing money from bank and relative were applied by farmers. This study recomm end to policy maker and, it will assist them to adjust and improve proper adaptation strategies in order to mitigate drought impacts in Afghanistan.
