AbstractBased on data in 2010, about 15,159,180 tons of MSW , which contain around 8,421,145 tons of organic municipal solid waste , and 5 ,129 million m 3 domestic wastewater was generated in Thailand. Convert ing organic municipal solid waste and domestic wastewater , which have problems of management in Thailand, into biogas can provide renewable energy and reduce greenhouse gas emission. Anaerobic digestion system is considered for converting the organic municipal solid waste and organic composition in do mestic wastewater into biogas. The biogas production potential is estimated to be 507.31 and 565.52 million m 3 /year from organic municipal solid waste and domestic wastewater , respectively. 431.44 million m 3 /year of biogas potential from organic municipal solid waste is assumed to substitute L iquid Petroleum G as (LPG) which account for 7.47 % of LPG consumption for cooking in 2011 and the biogas potential 75.87 million m 3 /year is estimated to generated electricity which account for 0.07 % of total electrici ty consumption in 2011. The biogas potential from domestic wastewater is assumed to use for LPG substitution which account for 9.79 % of LPG consumption for cooking in 2011. The greenhouse gas emission mitigation potential of using biogas from municipal solid waste and domestic wastewater is estimated to 7,604.44 GgCO 2eq /year , of which 6,771.27 GgCO 2eq /year from organic MSW and 833.17 GgCO 2eq /year from domestic wastewater. It is account for 3.21 % of total greenhouse gas emission ( 236.98 MtCO 2eq ) or 81.59 % of greenhouse gas emission from waste sector (9.32 MtCO 2eq ) or 4.77 % of greenhouse gas emission from energy sector of Thailand in 2000. T he biogas projects from municipal solid waste are already includ ed in the alternative energy development plan. Thai government already promot e d the programme to local administrative organizatio n and private sectors since 200 6 . However, the development of projects still new and notmuchsuc ess ful. Ontheotherhand, domestic wastewater is not yet identified as the source of alternative energy development plan i n Thailand . The rearesix types of barriers to the development of biogas projects ,such as, institutional, policy, technical, financial - related, informat ion and public support barriers .
