AbstractThe purpose of this research was carried out on assessment of the impact of flood in the Pak Ngum district and also to critically examine the various coping strategies. The study is limited to assess physical and social vulnerability assessment of flood by analyzing information from field surveys and produce vulner ability and flood hazard map and then evaluate coping strategies related to flood mitigation plan in Pak Ngum district. The vulnerability analysis has been conducted base on physical and social. It was found the result of this study shows that the children age less than15 years and elder‟s age greater than 66 years people were more vulnerable than young adult. Whereas, education is a vital that influence to vulnerable flood damage. The people who graduated upper elementary school had small level of risk from flood damage in compared with un educated peo ple . On the other hand, vulnerability of physical assessing was found the structural type of household damages related to the height of ground floor and wall material all of these flood affect depend on the water level and duration of inundation . The deve loped flood hazard map provides following information‟s, namely the elevation, slope, river distance, duration of inundation and water level those information‟s are highly important during making strategies to flood hazards mitigation. Among those factors , flood inundation duration provides highest effect to flood hazard with 0.33 of correlation; second and third factors are water level and distance from river respectively . Result of flood hazard map showed that Nonxai, Pak - Ngum, Veunkabao, Xiengletha, Xie nglena, Nabong and Nongphouvieng villages were in the high rank of risk of flood, and Naxa moderate of flood hazard. Economic coping mechanism was saving money for food and physical of coping mechanism were made construction of household more than one floo r. Social c oping mechanism w ere cleaning the house and surroundings, looking for alternative place to move, guarding the house to ensure safety of belongings, evacuating the important thing to the safety place, Preparing temporary place or relative‟s plac e and cleaning canal surroundings the house.
