AbstractThis research is studying the application of Wimax for the disaster telecom response. Wi-Fi is widely used in emergency networks to share a connection, but its range of coverage is limited. Wimax seems to be an interesting alternative for the disaster telecom response owing to its greater coverage. Based on the study of different scenarios in the Mozambican floods of 2008 context, this document is comparing the characteristics ofWi-Fi and Wimax for humanitarian relief. Wimax appears to solve partially the range issue but is not totally fitted for the disaster response as it leads to an important complexity (delays in the implementation, strong need of electricity ... ). The telecom response is a race against time to provide a communication to increase the response efficiency. The additional complexities of Wimax might thus present a risk for the relief operations. Wimax, at the current state of deployment is not feasible for the disaster applications but its improvements will have to be followed.
