Series Statement
AbstractThe research studies the preventive measures of HIV/AIDS of female sex workers (FSWs) in Hlaing Thar Yar Township, Myanmar. The objectives of the research were to explore the types of preventive measures HIV/AIDS applied, assess knowledge gained among the FSWs, examine the application and identify key constraints, and suggest recommendations to reduce the risks of HIV/AIDS of the FSWs. The research was conducted in 11 quarter, Hlaing Thar Yar Township, ex-capital of Yangon in Myanmar with a survey questionnaire using a total of 35 respondents consisting of 15 infected and 20 non-infected FSWs. The research was focused on quantitative aspects but qualitative approach was also applied to substantiate information and analysis. Several types of preventive measures of HIV/AIDS were aware between both positive and negative FSWs by applying male and female condoms including safe sex practices. The FSWs obtained their knowledge in the preventive measures primarily from NGOs such as AZG, MDM and PSI. Many means of their learning on the prevention were used which they obtained from health education, group discussion, peer education and counseling. In addition to the mentioned measures, others were also important consisting client's understanding, peer education, sufficient good quality condom applied and cooperation with partners. The counseling service was also provided to support both infected and non¬infected persons. The positive FSWs in this research had been infected HIV/AIDS due to lack of information, poor quality of condom used by client, lack of prevention in sexual relationship. The problems for FSWs were in using the preventive measures were related to the fact that their client did not accept the use of condom, lack of proper knowledge, poor quality of condom used and unwillingness of husband to cooperate in using condom. The main problems of the negative FSWs were more or less the same but they had less numbers of client and they decided to have their sex service only those who were willing to use condom. This is mainly due to their relatively higher education level that they had better access to information on the prevention and they had better income earning as they were also engaged in other job which the sex service was not only the choice to earn their Income. To strengthen the prevention of HIV/AIDS among FSWs in future, attention should be paid to various precautionary measures particularly the section of appropriate means of learning suitable for educational level of FSW s that are varied, the provision of counseling and follow-up program, the adequate supply of condom to reduce possible risk and the promotion of mass campaign on the prevention and its impacts to health through education and media that could raise better awareness both for FSWs and their clients
