Abstract | Two refiners of different types were used study refining effect on fiber properties: PFI mill and Escher Wyss. PFI mill makes a very pronounced difference with commercial scale refiners whereas Escher is somewhat similar to commercial mill refiners. Results showed that there were no new effects else that previously reported with PFI mill refined pulps. However, Escher Wyss refined pulps at SE and SEL of 240 and 3Ws/m were abundant in a large population of a new type of fibers with new characteristics. These fibers were termed frayed fibers by Dr. Mousa [2]. Since the issue of fiber fraying is a newly broken ground, there have been very limited studies on its effect on fiber characteristics. The objective of this study is in order to identify frayed fibers under high resolution microscope to unveil this issue. This study is an atlas of frayed fibers captured under high resolution microscope at different magnification. Frayed fiber is irregular fiber and appears as a jellyfish in water and thus encounters difficulty in its fiber dimension quantification. These newly identified fibers don't disperse like fiber flocs and thereby are provided a new identification. Under high resolution microscope, a rectification about frayed fiber was made to indicate that the dominating case for fiber fraying is many fiber fraying in one point. It is noted that based on microscope observation, fiber fraying classification, its generation mechanism and frayed fiber generation conditions, frayed fiber potential and its limitations have been trying to explain with a convincing way. Thus, a newly complete theory responsible for fiber fraying has been set up in this paper. Last but not the least, since fiber fraying is a newly broken ground, there is a lack of exact data to answer all the questions about its effect on fiber characteristics during refining process. Instead questions and some genera l tendency about frayed fibers could be proposed for further study. |
