Abstract | This research aims to help understand better the characteristic of ground movement due to twin tunnels at MRT Line 1 in Ho Chi Minh City. The monitoring data of ground surface settlements were collected and presented. The result showed that both face pressure and grouting volume were significant effect on ground movement due to tunnelling. The ground surface settlement cause by the first tunnel (EB tunnel) mostly ranged from 0.3 mm to 3 mm which is less than observed data 1 mm to 20 mm after the second tunnel (WB tunnel) passing. The superposition technique in Peck‟s empirical formulation has been used to back- analyze the transverse ground surface settlement of twin tunnels. It was found that the ground surface settlement troughs of twin tunnels could be quickly and reliably predicted using these methods. The trough width parameter after passage of twin tunnel was found to be from 0.21z to 0.46z and volume loss after twin tunnels passing was observed between 0.2 % and 0.7 %. For comparison purposes, two methods named contraction method and stress reduction method were also considered. A range of values from 0.45 % to 4.2 % were obtained for the contraction ratio while the calculated stress reduction factor ranged from 0.7 to 0.86. Then, the relationships of main parameters of these methods were also established. Good agreement is achieved among volume loss, contraction ratio, stress reduction factor and they can be used for prediction of surface settlement in other MRT lines which have similar geological and geotechnical conditions. |
