| Abstract | Open biomass burning releases a considerable amount of air pollution in the rural and sub - urban areas. The present study conducted an emission inventory of rice straw (RS) open burning in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh state , India for the year 2 014. A questionnaire survey was conducted among the local farmers of the Guntur district to get information of the agricultural practices and fraction burn in the fields. A total of 114 questionnaires were collected from 57 mandals of the district. T he survey results showed that most burning activities were happening in the Kharif crop season i.e. , in the months of January and December. Whereas , in Rabi crop season , most of the burning activities were happened in months of April and May . On an average 29 % of the rice straw was burned in the fields in both seasons. Most of the farmers use RS for animal feeding. T he annual emissions of pollutants fro m rice straw field open burning in Guntur in 2014 were carbon monoxide (CO); oxides of nitrogen (NO x ); sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ); ammonia (NH 3 ); particulate matter (PM 10 ); particulate matter (PM 2.5 ); elemental carbon (EC); organic carbon (OC); carbon dioxide (CO 2 ); methane (CH 4 ) and nitrousoxide (N 2 O) in ton n es per year were, 30174; 740; 143; 1330; 4693; 4465; 165 ; 1994; 381882 ; 3111 and 32 respectively . T he temporal and spatial variation of emissions in the district was also estimated . T he high and low emission estimates of all the species showed the uncertainty range from - 76% to 144 %. Further study should focus on the whole state and also the country , and should include the emission factors determined by measurements to incorporate the local conditions of the RS field open burning in the country. |
