AbstractOnline social networks offer attractive means of interaction and communication. They use different types of text based protocols for exchange of message. These protocols use low level language for exchange of message which is difficult to understand.Speech Act theory models the relationship between human communication messages and agents’ mental states. Using the speech act in communication, the users can understand the intention of each other and act according to it. Agents use agent communication language to communicate with their peers. This language defines the types of messages and their meanings that agents may exchange. In this research, the text based protocol of social network is represented using speech act. FIPA-ACL which is a type of agent communication language based on speech act is used to specify the text based protocols. The five text-based protocols, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), Session Initiation Protocol for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions (SIMPLE), Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP), Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), are being considered for this research study. The research study shows that specifying these protocols using speech act enhance the communication and users can easily understand the intention of each other. With this, the communication between the protocols becomes effective and efficient.
