Abstract | An Giang is one of the most urbanized provinces in Mekong Delta. Besides positive effects, urbanization causes some drawbacks in Long Xuyen City and other cities as well, such as uncontrolled immigration, job-creation, social housing for vulnerable people, illegal settlement on rivers, slums, water pollution, etc. Thus, the objective of this research project is to find out the current situation of water pollution and infringement by housing on urban rivers and canals in Long Xuyen city center. The research used mixed method, both quantitative and qualitative, for analyzing characteristics and determining the causes of water pollution and landscape infringement. Those are important in improving the people's living environment and increasing the diversity of and protecting natural landscapes. In addition, this research also presents experiences, policies, and ways, which countries in Asia have employed to improve water pollution and landscape infringement along rivers. The results of study show that the general status of surface water and landscape along rivers in the city center is not in good condition. Many problems affect directly or indirectly such as infrastructure, housing, income, finance program requiring for improving water and housing. The low levels are of perception and behavior of people in protecting the environment. To be able to improve efficiently the water pollution and infringement and scape along rivers and canals in city, the local government need to address these current problems by improving basic facilities, motivating the programs, campaigns, and regulations to improve the perceptions and behaviors in protection of environment and water. In addition, the study also recommended policies from provincial government, local authority and plan coordination between the communities of the city with departments concerned of province, and solutions for raising people awareness with protecting water resource and training for people to protect water environment in the city. |
