Abstract | The solutions to minimize solid waste have become a top concern for urban areas in the world. There are a lot of solutions for this issue and solid waste separation (SWS) at source is one of best choices. Buon Ma Thuot (BMT) City has also faced with this problem for long time. But it looks like that garbage situation has not improved much. For this reason, this research is to assess the current situation of SWS at source and also to investigate the perception, behavior of people in SWS in BMT City. This study is limited to the solid waste from household. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used in this research. Data collection consist of primary data from survey, key interview, observation and secondary data from annual report from divisions waste management, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, BMT environment companies, books, journal, internet, written documents, etc. The results show that BMT City is not good in SWS. The local government does not have a good vision for solid waste management (SWM) and SWS. The shortage of basic facilities, campaigns, plans for SWS lead people not interested in SWS. Most people have low perception, behavior for solid waste separation and they often do not sort waste at home. There are some groups who often do waste separation for their profit and they mainly use basic techniques. Moreover, this study also provides recommendations to improve the situation of solid waste separation and support for sustainable waste management in BMT city such as implementation of educational campaigns and promotions for SWS by using media equipment such as magazine, TV, Radio. For the shortage of basic facilities, the local government should mobilize funds for it by balancing the budgets for other fields or raise money for it from community by using taxes, laws, fees such as using the Pay-As-You-Throw charges (less waste people discharged, less fee people pay).Besides, local government should establish some appropriate policies; regulations to constrain people participate in SWS effectively. |
