Series Statement
AbstractThe rapid urbanization had brought many consequences to the urban development pattern in many cities in Asia and in Vietnam. Due to the industrialization and urbanization processes, cities are losing their landscape, open spaces and heritages areas. Therefore, it is fair to say that urban developments in some Asian cities and in Vietnam in particular are losing their own characteristic and being homogenized by the trend of globalization. The rising question is that whether it worth to compensate the cultural spirit to achieve the economic goals or is there another way to harmonize these two aspects and keep them in pace of each other. Binh Duong New City was chosen as one significant example. It was built to be an advance and modern new political and soon become the new administrative center of Binh Duong province, where there is a big shift in term of cultural activities between the new city and the old capital, Thu Dau Mot city. Even though there are many benefits from the physical infra - structure of a new city, people are not yet being attractive to live in this city. It is arguable that BDNC has not yet successful in showing its own image. As the image of a city is not only showing through its advance of homogeneous and modern infrastructure but the image of city is also showing through its own activities, history and heritages. The main factors to revitalize a city lay on its own culture, and history of development. Therefore, this study takes Binh Duong New City as a case study to investigate the relationship between urban daily activities and urban development. The findings in this research show that there is incompatibility between the citizens of Binh Duong New City and the city developers. Moreover, the current service level is inadequate due to the misunderstanding between two main factors, the citizens and the developer. But most importantly, the big shift in the cultural daily activities creates a barrier that makes people reluctant to move and live in Binh Duong New City.
