Abstract | Access to the information of residents living in the distant remote areas is very hard because these areas are lacking of telecommunication facility. The scantiness of access facility is mostly due to the constructi on of physical cable plant to the sparse population geography requiring a hi gh cost of investment to telephone operator. Thus, most operators have less incentive to instal l cable line to a remote and sparse population areas because these areas are uneconomical in vestment. Until recently, the emergence of advanced wireless broadband technologies e.g. WiMAX and IEEE 802.16 standard have significantly increased choice on network operators to obtain an affordable-cost access network. WiMAX technology currently becomes as one of practical standard of broadband fixed wireless access (BFWA) system. Currently, the economy of BFWA system is yet ambiguous explanation since the cost of broadband wireless access system is stra ightforwardly relative to the speed of data rate, or consistently to the cost per transmitte d bit. The cost per transmitted bits drives a great challenge to operators in attempting to provide an affordable price broadband wireless access network. Network planner de votes to optimize an efficient network planning with the target on lower the system cost of broadband wire less system. Reducing the cost of broadband wireless access, however, stems from many alternatives e.g. sharing network infrastructure, lowering the complex ity of equipments and technologies. For sharing network infrastructure, it is too ideal to implement on the competitive market. Hence, the practical approach ha s to rely on efficient planning. This research focuses on the assessm ent of WiMAX technology as a BFWA network in a specific developing telecommunica tions market. It examines the economic feasibility of WiMAX, and presents a di scussion of planning and characteristics of technology. The study explores th e efficient and simple met hod for planning of wireless access systems with WiMAX to support future BFWA system. Using empirical data and original subscriber traffic from measuring, it is shown that the BFWA with WiMAX technology is a capacity limited system. The cap acity of WiMAX is related to different factors depending on the configuration of wi reless channel. The factors which affect system capacity include frequency bandwidth and spectrum allocation, estimation of traffic per subscriber, and choice of adap tive modulation from subscriber terminal. The research study is suitable appropr iated for planning BFWA system for connecting residents to the Internet with WiMA X, as processing results demonstrate that it provides simple network dimensioning method for capturing the number of access points with key design parameters for achievi ng a cost effective implementation. Finally, the study proposes a new engin eering-economic analytical model for evaluating a WiMAX as a prospective BFWA network. The study shows that the service area, quality of network planning and amou nt of frequency bandw idth allocation to WiMAX technology strongly affect the network’s economic of merit, making investment decisions in BFWA networ k highly dependent on them. |
