AbstractLivestock is an important occupational activity which has been promoted to improve livelihood of Thai small farmers for a long time. However, the sustainable livelihood of small farmers is always under question mark. This study is an attempt, which has been made to assess the livelihood sustainability of smallholder livestock farmers in Northeast region of Thailand, analyze the livelihood assets, and identified the problems associated with livestock farming, and risk perceived by the farmers, and factors contributing to the sustainability of livelihood. Three livestock farming systems, Ruminant livestock farming system (RM), Non-ruminant livestock farming system (NRM), and Mixed-livestock farming system (MF) have been investigated and analyzed. A total number of 205 households were sampled in a district that focuses on livestock farming. Discriminant analysis is used for the identification of significant contributing factors to explain the state of sustainability. Income-expenditure ratio for RM and MF, and adequate experience for livestock rearing in NRM category have been identified to explain sustainable livelihood. It is found that livestock farming is a good livelihood option for smallholders. Human asset is very vital that needs to be improved through training supported by relevant information system for the farmers’ livelihood improvement. The concerned agencies, particularly government and local organizations, should be proactively involved for discharging their responsibilities in terms of policy planning andproject formulations and implementation. iii
