AbstractThe major focus of this research is to deve lop a remote sensing model to estimate methane gas emission from irrigated pa ddy field. Initially the amount of methane gas emission was collected through field experiments using a closed chamber and further analyzed to establish the rate of emission at different stages of paddy growth. Simultaneously the spectral reflectance of paddy cover was also m easured using spectrometer and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was subs equently calculated. Above-ground biomass was collected from the paddy fields to relate with rate of methane gas emission and also with NDVI. It was found that the rate of methane gas emission was highly related with NDVI and above-ground biomass. The peak period of emission was at the maximum tillering to maximum flowering stage followe d by declining further towards the harvest time. Based on the relationship with NDVI and biomass, the model is built to estimate methane gas emission with higher degree of re liability that support s the use of remote sensing technique replacing field measurements.
