| The dynamic response of a simply-supported bridge due to the effect of vehicle braking is analyzed when only one vehicle passes and when several vehicles pass with a fixed time interval. The braking is applied to the vehicle either continuously or periodically. The vehicle is modelled as an unsprung single-axle and double-axle system. The bridge is represented by a lumped mass finite element model. The dynamic response of the bridge is determined using the Newmark integration method. The effete of the randomly varying braking force , generated by a single-axle vehicle moving over a rough bridge deck, is considered using simulation techniques. From a statistical analysis of the corresponding maximum dynamic responses, impact factors for displacement , moment and shear responses are calculated. In addition, impact factors resulting from different braking manner, passage of one vehicle or several vehicles and pavement properties (smooth , rough ) are compared with those given in a number of bridge codes. They are considerably larger than those specified in codes. The analysis shows that the single-axle vehicle causes very large and high frequency oscillations in the shear force due to a singularity of the shear force at the position of the vehicle. (0) |
